Dr. David Brown is the Small Ruminant Specialist with University of Missouri Extension. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Science from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and his Ph.D. in Animal Science from the University of Limpopo (formerly the University of the North) in South Africa. Prior to joining the University of Missouri, Dr. Brown was a postdoctoral research associate at Virginia State University, where his research focused on the use of high-tannin sorghum to reduce methane emissions and improve productivity in goats.
Over the years, his research effort has focused on the response of small ruminants to tannin-rich plants and their optimal inclusion rates for improved productivity. Dr. Brown’s current research and extension efforts center on low-input, sustainable strategies to enhance small ruminant health and performance. His applied research explores multispecies grazing - integrating cattle with sheep or goats - as an approach to reducing gastrointestinal parasite burdens in small ruminants.
He works closely with producers through on-farm demonstrations, applied research trials, and targeted workshops to promote evidence-based practices that enhance productivity within the small ruminant industry.
