Jorge A. Mosjidis is a Professor Emeritus at Auburn University and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn, Alabama. He has an Agronomy degree from the University of Chile, Santiago, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside. He recently retired but remains partially active. He a geneticist and a plant breeder. As a plant breeder he developed new forage crop cultivars that are more productive and persistent for use in pastures and grazelands. The new cultivars are used also as cover crops for the protection and conservation of soil and water resources, reduction of surface water pollutant transport, improvement of soil productivity, preservation of a favorable balance between pests and predators and enhance biological diversity. In addition, some of the cultivars have ornamental value for banks and roadsides or for the production of bioenergy. Some of the cultivars can be valuable to organic farmers and those interested in growing crops for green manure. Species bred are sericea lespedeza, sunn hemp, common vetch, hairy vetch, crimson clover and red clover. He has collaborated in finding parasite control properties of sericea lespedeza and using it. He developed cultivars of sunn hemp that can produce seed in the continental USA and can be used as forage in addition to other uses.
