On behalf of the American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control (ACSRPC), I would like to invite you and your organization to participate as a sponsor at an upcoming International Congress on Sustainable Parasite Control entitled What Works with Worms, which will be held on May 25-26, 2015, in Pretoria, South Africa.

The purpose of the Congress, which has been organized by the ACSRPC, the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA), and the Veterinary Science Faculty of the University of Pretoria, is to assemble preeminent integrated parasite management (IPM) experts from around the world to present a full spectrum of useful information on current practical, useful, and economically achievable measures to assist all advisors in giving correct, sustainable, and holistic advice to small ruminant farmers, with the aim of managing all the important internal parasites.

The ACSRPC was formed in 2002 in response to the critical state of the small ruminant industry associated with the emergence of anthelmintic resistant worms, and since then, the problem has gotten much worse, reaching epidemic proportions in many parts of the world, including the USA and South Africa.

To face this challenge, the ACSRPC was formed as a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional, and multi-national group of scientists, veterinarians, and extension specialists devoted to (1) developing alternative methods for sustainable control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants and (2) educating stakeholders in the small ruminant industry on the most up to date methods and recommendations for control of GIN.

Since its inception, the ACSRPC has collectively made possible ccomplishments that could never have been achieved individually, leading to the development of an IPM approach to controlling parasites. is sensible and sustainable approach includes applying “smart drenching” principles when using anthelmintics, utilizing appropriate and creative pasture management strategies, use of FAMACHA© and the Five Point Check® (novel ideas for rapid diagnosis of GIN infection in sheep and goats) for applying targeted selective treatments, and application of alternative, non-chemical treatment technologies.

As more and more farmers experience success using the IPM approach, demand for additional information on simple, inexpensive, sustainable solutions for parasite control have skyrocketed. Meeting this demand is the primary purpose of the upcoming Congress. Leading IPM experts from the USA, South Africa, and Europe will provide a united, authoritative message to small ruminant producers across the globe on practical, cost-effective, farm-applicable parasite control strategies, with all talks and proceedings papers made available to stakeholders through this website and other electronic and print formats.

The format for the 2-day Congress will be oral presentations followed by question and answer sessions on diagnostic procedures, drug resistance, smart drenching, alternative methods of parasite control in small ruminants, and other IPM technologies, with an option for hands-on training on proper application of FAMACHA© and the Five Point Check® diagnostic tools on day 2.
