Juan Felipe Torres-Acosta is a specialist in small ruminant production and health in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan (UADY), Mexico (Since 1992). He obtained his Veterinary degree from UADY, an MSc degree from the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and continued with his Ph.D at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, England. His research interests include the manipulation of nutrition (energy and protein, etc.) to enhance resilience and resistance against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants under tropical browsing conditions, the evaluation of the direct anthelmintic (AH) effect of tropical plants against GIN (under in vitro and in vivo conditions), and the influence of the ruminants’ foraging behaviour on the biology of GIN (self-medication). He also works on the epidemiology of anthelmintic resistance in ruminant farms of tropical regions and the development of targeted selective AH treatment schemes aiming to reduce the dependence on AH drugs under tropical conditions. His teaching duties include Veterinary and Animal Science undergraduates and postgraduate students at UADY and other Institutions in Mexico and overseas.
